Stanford University in the Bay Area

One of the leading private universities in the world, Stanford University attracts the best and brightest scholars and athletes. Known as The Farm, Stanford is about 20 miles north of San Jose and about 25 miles south of San Francisco. Its Cardinal Football team has a healthy rivalry with the UC Berkeley Bears, playing in the Big Game each year. Stanford Hospital & Medical Center is undergoing an expansion, which is to be completed in
late 2017.

Stanford Hospital & Clinics

Leaders in medical research and care in an expansive number of areas, Stanford Hospital & Clinics serve a large part of the Bay Area population, and often welcome patients from around the world. A new hospital building is currently under construction, and is slated to open in 2018 for patient care. The expansion will add 600 beds and increase the intensive care unit.

Stanford Athletics

The Cardinal are fearsome contenders in several sports. They’re probably most well known for their Cardinal football team, having sent “scholar athletes” like quarterback Andrew Luck into the pros. The University’s athletic facilities, from the tennis courts to the golf course to the aquatics center, are pretty impressive, and are sometimes used for pro-level tournaments.

  • Can I take a tour of the campus?

Visitors can take a self-guided tour or a student-led tour. The guided tour is a one-hour walking tour that begins at the Visitor Center. It covers the Main Quad, Memorial Church, White Plaza, and the Science & Engineering Quad-all part of Stanford’s central campus. Tours are conducted every day at 11 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., and are free of charge. If you’d rather explore the campus on your own, you can pick up a map at the Stanford Visitor Center.
  • Are campus events open to non-students?

Several Stanford University events are available to visitors and the community. These include sporting events, museums, lecture series, theatrical performances, concerts, and cultural activities.
